VISIT TO HIGHGROVE ON SEPTEMBER 26TH  2008

Margaret Csillag {Croydon} received an invitation from H R H Prince of Wales for the Class of 47, Croydon, to visit his garden at Highgrove to celebrate their 70th Birthdays on September 26th, as only nine of that year were free, the invitation was extended to Minerva Members. 50 Old Girls from 17 Schools joined Naterlie and Jen, the excellent Minerva representatives, who organised the occasion with great aplomb.

A coach picked us up from Kemble Station or the centre of Tetbury. The sun shone, the necessary security was swift and efficient, and we were soon split into two groups with charming and knowledgeable garden guides, who lead us for an enchanting tour of the fifteen acre garden. From mysterious Temples, an inviting Tree house, amazing sculptures, a well stocked walled vegetable garden the tour continued with special features round every corner. We were allowed to admire the gardens right up to the Prince’s front door. Apparently there are cameras everywhere but I looked hard and often but couldn’t see anything to spoil the peace and tranquillity of a most beautiful and unexpected garden. There were weeds, trees that needed attention, vegetables needing picking, but that made the garden more real.  A very welcome cup of tea and delicious biscuits greeted us  at the end of our journey, followed by a very tempting visit to the well stocked shop .

Many famous people had contributed to transform this garden over 28 years but I thought Roy Strong’s influence on the dazzling topiary was the best. The miles of exciting hedges with designer 'tops' and the individual creations were mind boggling, as were the various sculptures, many given as a thank you for help from the Prince’s Trust. A memorial to a favourite dog Tigga was incredibly moving.

A memorable day to start our birthday Celebrations thanks to a kind Prince, his excellent staff, beautiful weather and Margaret who seized an opportunity to give us all so much  pleasure .
